今日單字 = mandatory [adj.]  強制性的

前幾天各家媒體大規模報導的一個消息，就是香港的政府總部廣場前正在舉行的由學生發起的示威抗議，你知道是怎麼一回事嗎？

文章結構

這篇文章是很典型的新聞寫作格式，段落短，中間穿插了新聞主角發表的言論談話，很適合剛開始想要加強新聞英語閱讀能力的同學用來訓練自己。第一段直接破題，開門見山告訴讀者學民抗議之後政府所做的決策。第二段及第三段則是以香港特守梁振英的決定與談話。第四與第五段則是簡介一下這場示威抗議的起因，在於香港政府在國民教育的課程中納入「愛國」思想，因此被學生民眾視為是洗腦教育。最後一段則是舉例說明原本納入的國教必修課程中提到了哪些中國政府的立場與思想。

第一段

The Hong Kong government scrapped a mandatory plan making school children take pro-Chinese mainland patriotism courses.

香港政府廢止一向強制性的計畫，該計畫原本打算讓學童接受親中的愛國思想課程。

解說：

* scrap 這個動詞用的很生動。原本scrap的意思是小紙片、廢棄不要的東西，這裡作為動詞，意思就是「讓...變成廢棄不要的東西」，引申為「廢棄、拆毀」的意思。

* manadatory 是本日學習重點單字，意思是「強制的」或者「法律規定必須做的、義務的」。

* pro-China 的 pro- 字首代表「贊成...的」，其他用法例如 pro-nuclear  「贊成使用核能」、pro-abortion「贊成墮胎」。

* patriotism 的意思是「愛國情操」，其中 patr- 這部份是一個字根，意思是「爸爸的」（如 paternal「父親的」），我們自己的國家常被稱為「祖國」，因此 patriotism 這個字裡頭有「爸爸」也不足為奇了。

第四段

The government relented after thousands of people protested the courses, with many residents saying it amounts to "brainwashing" impressionable young minds with propaganda. Hong Kong has a large degree of autonomy from the Beijing government. 

成千上萬人抗議這項課程的進行，許多民眾認為這些宣傳會造成對於那些易受影響的學童有洗腦作用，最後政府終於鬆綁。北京給予香港很大程度的自治權。

解說

* 第一句是個典型的「獨立分詞構句」：前面主要子句的主詞是 the government，後面 with 引導出來的主詞是many residents，接著一個分詞片語 saying it amounts to....片語

* amount to 的原意是「加總為...」，這裡引申成「導致...（結果）」。

* impressionable 是從impression「印象」變來的，-able字尾則有「可以...的」，因此impressionable字面上的意思是「可以留下印象的」，學童什麼都不懂，自然就容易留下印象了。

* 最後有個片語 a large degree of，這裡的 degree 的意思是「程度」。
